My primary interest in serving on the Council and committees as a privileged outsider is to assist the University assess, understand and account publicly for its multiple missions of scholarship. My fascination with the organisation of learning and questioning the pursuit of excellence in Cambridge has remained with me from being an undergraduate through various professional vocations. I am now a financier and company director, chairman of three specialist technology investment funds in the UK and the investment committee of a Swiss fiduciary, Corestone. I am also chairman of The Economy Bank, NV in the Netherlands and director and chair of the audit committee of Kinnevik, AB in Sweden and senior independent director of TT electronics plc. I was a managing director at Abn Amro, Lazard and ING Baring's respectively specialising in the corporate financing of telecom and financial institutions. I chaired the Bush Theatre from 2004 to 2010 and am a trustee of the Institute of Historical Research. I served for 9 years in HM Diplomatic Service in Brussels, Tehran and Addis Ababa and was educated at Cambridge, Princeton, Berkeley and SOAS.
