I am currently Professor of Photonics within the Department of Engineering and am also the Master of Sidney Sussex College. Previously I was a lecturer in Physics at the University of Bath and a Lecturer, rising to Professor, in Optical Communications at the University of Bristol. My current research interests include optical data and quantum communications, photonic integration and RF systems, including both radio over fibre distributed antennas and RFID sensing. I am also the Cambridge Director of the EPSRC CDT in Integrated Photonic and Electronic Systems.
Via my membership of Council I hope I can contribute to how Cambridge addresses the challenges it faces whilst continuing to be a world class research institution able provide an excellent education for our students and a supportive environment for our staff to thrive. My particular interests in the University centre around graduate education and research strategy. As an active academic within the University, I understand the aspirations and concerns of academics and professional staff but I also understand the concerns of Colleges and their students. I therefore hope that I will be able to provide a balanced view on behalf of both communities.
