I am Professor of Cardiovascular Pharmacology in the Division of Experimental Medicine and Immunotherapeutics, Department of Medicine, where I lead a research group focusing on the discovery of new drug targets and medicines to treat cardiovascular disease and more recently, SARS-CoV-2. I was previously British Heart Foundation Lecturer, then British Heart Foundation Principal Scientist and Reader in the same department. To date, I have supervised over twenty PhD postgraduate students. I am also a Fellow, Trustee and Director of Studies, St Catharine's College.
As a member of the Council I will contribute my experience and expertise in research, teaching and administration in both University and college spheres. I hope to use my influence to improve opportunities for our early career researchers to secure tenured positions, particularly through increased benefactions to the University. Secondly, to support strategies to maintain our current numbers of postgraduates. Financial support for postgraduates is under threat as a result of reduced funding from research councils and charities, as well as the transition of European Union students from home to overseas rates for University fees.
